Brief explanation of the CEFR means: Common European frame of reference. The CEFR serves to standardize and transfer the language levels of learners from different countries and cultures. This classification has the advantage of quickly assessing linguistic abilities and thus orientating teachers where they have to start. There are six levels from A1 to C2, with A 1 meaning beginners with little previous knowledge and C 2 describing a level that is almost native to the language. Elementary language use is taught in A courses. In an A-1 course, learners acquire the ability to introduce themselves and to form simple sentences, mostly main clauses. In an A-2 course, more complex sentence connectors (causal and temporal conjunctions) are introduced that enable the formation of subordinate clauses (e.g. and, or, but, because). When it comes to listening comprehension, teachers assume that this process is relatively slow. B courses (B1 and B2) are about independent language use. In such courses you learn to hold conversations without the teacher having to constantly step in to help. The variety of topics increases, abstract topics can also be discussed. Passing the B1 test is necessary for naturalization. At the B2 level, conversations with a native speaker are possible without any problems. The hiring of nurses depends on a passed B2 test. In addition, a B2 language level is required for various training paths. C courses are about proficient use of language that comes close to that of a native speaker. The C1 level is a prerequisite for university studies. At this level, one is able to speak fluently, spontaneously, effortlessly on a wide range of topics. C2 speakers master all language areas with ease. This level is required for interpreters, translators and medical professionals in the field of psychotherapy.
